The Chateau of Duchcov was built between 1675-1685 for Jan Bedřich of Valdtejn, following the project made by the architect J. B. Mathey, in the site where the older Renaissance residence of the Lobkowicz family had been situated. In 1707 an extension, including two side wings, was made. The precincts of the Chateau with a unique Baroque garden were modified since 1720, in 1812-1818 the facades were turned into the shape of Classicism and later a large Country Park was arranged. In 1959 an invasive change to the grounds of Chateau was made. The baroque hospital was pulled down for the purpose of strip coal mining. The fresco by V. V. Reiner, originally placed in the Hospital's cupola, was transferred into the new park pavilion. Visitors can view the art gallery with portraits of the Valdstejn family, the exposition housed in the Billiards Wing, three rooms used by staff of the Chateau and the museum featuring the famous person, Giacomo Casanova, who worked here as a librarian for the last thirteen years of his life. On the ground floor there is an exposition of some rare fine Baroque art works owned by The National Gallery of Prague and the ground floor of the Casanova wing used for seasonal exibitions. |
